Inauguration of Multi-Level Car Parking Facility in Kohima by Nagaland Governor La Ganesan

Kohima, 4th November, 2023: The Multi-Level Car Parking (MLCP) at P.R Hill in Kohima was officially inaugurated by the Honorable Nagaland Governor, La Ganesan, in the presence of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio. This momentous occasion marked the introduction of a new MLCP facility under the smart city schemes in Kohima, and it was met with enthusiasm from the attendees.

In his inaugural address, Governor La Ganesan expressed his delight at the introduction of the new MLCP facilities in Kohima. He acknowledged the persistent challenges that the city has faced in terms of traffic and parking over the years. Being the capital city of the state, Kohima has been witnessing substantial growth in both its geographical area and population. The Governor noted the daily struggle caused by the continuous urban expansion and the increasing number of vehicles, leading to parking issues that burdened the city’s roads and disrupted daily life.

Governor Ganesan urged the gathering to unite and take substantial steps towards restoring order, alleviating parking troubles, and ushering in a new era of urban modernity in Kohima.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio emphasized the significance of this achievement, as the State has now inaugurated two Multi-Level Parking facilities, one at the old Medical Directorate in PR Hill Kohima and the other at NST bus station Kohima. He called upon all stakeholders to use and maintain these parking facilities responsibly, displaying better civic sense.

Furthermore, Chief Minister Rio announced plans to prioritize the road from T. Khel model village to IG stadium Mereima, with additional funding from NHIDCL, to alleviate traffic congestion in the capital city and provide convenience to commuters from Wokha, Tseminyu, Zunheboto, and Mokokchung without having to pass through the city center.

Rio also stressed the importance of implementing Building Bye laws to ensure space for vehicle parking during house construction in the city.

K. Theunuo, CEO of Kohima Smart City Development Limited (KSCDL), highlighted the significance of the MLCP’s construction, describing it as a long-awaited dream that would offer modern parking solutions and alleviate traffic congestion in Kohima. The MLCP, with a total floor area of about 140,000 square feet and G + 5 floors, includes 62 rooms for shops. It provides three floors for car parking, accommodating 180 cars, equipped with public toilets, CCTV surveillance, lift facilities, and a food court on the top floor. Epoxy car deck flooring is provided on all levels.

Initially sanctioned by the Ministry of Urban Development under the JNURM scheme in March 2009, the project faced funding constraints and was later desanctioned on 14th August 2015. However, with the establishment of KSCDL, the project was transferred to Kohima Smart City on 27th September 2018 for implementation under the Smart City Mission. After taking over, KSCDL approved the project and allocated 31.22 crore rupees for its execution.

This Multi-Level Car Parking facility is set to significantly improve the parking situation and enhance urban development in Kohima, providing convenience and modern amenities to its residents and visitors.
