Justice Lanusungkum Jamir Appointed Acting Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court

In a recent announcement, the Central Government has appointed Justice Lanusungkum Jamir as the Acting Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court. This decision follows the elevation of Chief Justice Sandeep Mehta to the Supreme Court.

As per the official notification, issued under the powers conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, Justice Jamir, currently a Judge of the Gauhati High Court, will assume the responsibilities of the Chief Justice with effect from the date Chief Justice Sandeep Mehta relinquishes the charge, consequent upon his appointment to the Supreme Court.

Justice Jamir, who obtained his LLB degree in 1988 from the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), has a longstanding legal career. He enrolled in the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Tripura in 1989. Elevated to the bench as an Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on May 22, 2013, he took the oath as an Additional Judge of the Manipur High Court on October 9, 2018, following a transfer, and became permanent on November 12, 2018. Justice Jamir assumed office as a Judge of the Gauhati High Court on June 10, 2022.

This appointment underscores the continued commitment to upholding the judicial system’s efficiency and ensuring a seamless transition in leadership within the Gauhati High Court.
