Awareness Seminar in Tuensang Tackles Rising Concern of Substance Abuse Among Youth

In a united initiative to confront the concerning surge in substance abuse among the youth in Tuensang district, a one-day awareness seminar unfolded at the CTS Hall in Tuensang town. The event brought together child care institutions, DCPU officials, and various stakeholders, aiming to equip participants with crucial insights into addiction, the nature and types of substance abuse, and effective prevention and management strategies.

The resource persons for the seminar, Thapli, a counselor from Integrated Development Society (IDS) Tuensang, and P Ramtsula, a counselor from Good Will Society Drug De-Addiction Centre in Tuensang, played pivotal roles in sharing their expertise. Thapli’s presentation delved into “Understanding Addiction and Nature and Type of Substance Abuse,” emphasizing the distinction between legal and non-legal drugs. Thapli shed light on the emergence of drug abuse as an epidemic in the late 1980s and addressed the stigmatization faced by current drug users.

In her session on “Prevention and Management of Substance Abuse,” Ramtsula underscored the necessity for increased support for users. She advocated for proactive care and engagement in activities to identify and address substance abuse at its initial stages.

The collaborative effort showcased the community’s commitment to tackling the pressing issue of youth substance abuse. By fostering awareness, providing insights, and suggesting proactive strategies, the seminar aimed to create a more informed and resilient community in Tuensang.
