Nagaland Deputy CM T. R. Zeliang Flags Off Tribal March on Jan Jatiya Gaurav Divas

November 15, 2023: Nagaland’s Deputy Chief Minister, T. R. Zeliang, ceremoniously initiated a tribal march in Kohima today, commemorating Jan Jatiya Gaurav Divas. In his address, Zeliang underscored the historical significance of November 15, dedicated to honoring tribal freedom fighters, coinciding with the Birth Anniversary of Birsa Munda, an eminent figure in the tribal freedom movement.

Highlighting the importance of recognizing tribal leaders often overshadowed in the broader narrative of India’s independence struggle, Zeliang urged the community to diligently trace and document the lives and contributions of such Naga personalities. He expressed hope that the event would not only pay homage but also foster unity and brotherhood among the tribes.

The Deputy CM stressed the need to promote unity and overcome tribalism within the Naga community. Angelina Tajen, Secretary for Tribal Affairs, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the government’s commitment to acknowledging tribal contributions. This acknowledgment has led to the implementation of various welfare schemes aimed at benefitting tribal communities.

Tajen announced that Jan Jatiya Gaurav Divas 2023 would extend over fifteen days, featuring a diverse range of activities showcasing the unique culture, traditions, food, art, and crafts of the tribal communities. The extended celebration aims to provide a comprehensive platform for appreciating and preserving the rich heritage of Nagaland’s tribes.
