Union Home Minister Amit Shah Announces Scrapping of Free Movement Regime between India and Myanmar

In a significant development, Union Home Minister Amit Shah declared the cessation of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) between India and Myanmar, orchestrated by the Ministry of Home Affairs. This decision, according to Shah, is a crucial step towards fortifying the internal security of the nation and safeguarding the demographic integrity of India’s North Eastern states adjacent to Myanmar. The move echoes Prime Minister Modi’s steadfast commitment to fortify India’s borders.

The Ministry of External Affairs is currently in the process of dismantling the FMR, a suspension that has been promptly enforced based on the MHA’s recommendation.

It’s notable that India shares a 1,643-kilometer border with Myanmar, which has become a refuge for thousands of Rohingya refugees fleeing persecution in Myanmar.
