Press Release of RPP: Arrest of Bahar Uddin, “Druglord of the Northeast”

The recent arrest of Bahar Uddin, dubbed the “Druglord of the Northeast,” serves as a stark reminder to the Naga people of the importance of electing responsible leadership. Bahar Uddin’s rise is emblematic of the lawlessness and corruption that have plagued the state under Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio’s tenure since 2003.

The “War on Drugs,” spearheaded by the Nagaland Police under the leadership of DGP Rupin Sharma, has finally seen a significant breakthrough with the apprehension of this notorious kingpin. However, it’s essential to clarify that the “War on Drugs” is solely the brainchild of the Nagaland Police and has no association with the policies of the PDA government. The state government’s absence in upholding law and order has been conspicuous for far too long.

Bahar Uddin’s drug empire, operating out of Dimapur for decades, thrived under the alleged protection of corrupt politicians, police officials, and other nefarious elements. With his apprehension in a joint operation between Nagaland and Assam Police on March 22, 2023, it’s imperative that the results of the preliminary investigation, including the identification of individuals and organizations complicit in his activities, are disclosed to the public.

The lack of transparency surrounding the case raises concerns of potential political interference. Therefore, the Rising People’s Party (RPP) urges the police to consider transferring the case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to ensure impartiality and negate any perceived political pressure.

In light of these developments, the RPP challenges the PDA government to take immediate action to seize Bahar Uddin’s assets under relevant drug enforcement laws.
