Chumoukedima Deputy Commissioner Urges Balanced Response to Extortion Concerns

Chumoukedima, April 28, 2024 – Deputy Commissioner Abhinav Shivam of Chumoukedima highlighted the relatively lower incidence of extortion cases in the district compared to Dimapur. He emphasized the importance of business communities reacting proportionately to the situation at hand during a meeting held yesterday regarding the closure of business establishments in Chumoukedima.

Acknowledging the proactive efforts of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), youth organizations, and the police in tackling illegal taxation, Deputy Commissioner Shivam briefed attendees on the directives issued by the Home Department. He underscored that the government has taken cognizance of the illegal taxation issue and has issued appropriate orders.

Deputy Commissioner Shivam urged business communities to end the closure of establishments immediately, taking into account the relatively lesser prevalence of extortion cases in Chumoukedima. He proposed the formation of a task force or a coordination cell involving the district administration, police, and CSOs to address the situation promptly. Additionally, he recommended regular meetings among stakeholders to ensure effective collaboration and communication.

In the interest of public welfare, the meeting, attended by representatives from the Chumoukedima Chamber of Commerce & Trade Association and CSOs, concluded that business establishments in the district would resume operations by tomorrow.
