Manipur Chief Minister’s Convoy Ambushed by Suspected Kuki Insurgents

10th June 2024: The advance security convoy of Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh was ambushed by suspected Kuki insurgents while en route to Jiribam, located on the Assam border. The Chief Minister was scheduled to visit Jiribam on Tuesday following the arson incidents that have escalated tensions in the region.

Yesterday, suspected Kuki insurgents set homes of Meitei villagers in Jiribam on fire. This act was reportedly in retaliation to a Meitei mob burning down Kuki structures, including a church, in response to the killing of a 59-year-old Meitei man.

Sources from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) stated: “We are not intimidated by cowardly acts such as ambushing the police. The security forces under the unified command will respond strongly. Any threat to movement on the national highway connecting Jiribam district will be neutralized.”

The attack on the convoy underscores the ongoing ethnic tensions and the volatile security situation in the region. The government has vowed to take strict action against the insurgents and ensure the safety of the national highways and the affected communities.
