Massive Fire Ravages MMC Shopping Complex in Mokokchung: Immediate Relief Efforts Underway

On the evening of Saturday, February 5th, 2024, a devastating fire engulfed the MMC Shopping Complex in Mokokchung, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Deputy Commissioner Mokokchung, Thsuvisie Phoji, revealed that a total of 62 shops were completely razed, while 73 shops suffered severe damage in the inferno.

In response to the crisis, an emergency joint meeting was convened with various civil society organizations, including Ao Senden, Watsu Mungdang, Ao Students’ Conference, All Ward Union Mokokchung Town, and Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce and Industries, along with representatives from Fire & Emergency Services, SDRF, and Police. The aim was to assess the situation and extend immediate relief and assistance to affected shop owners, along with plans for rehabilitation.

Deputy Commissioner Phoji attributed the suspected cause of the fire to a short circuit, emphasizing that a complete assessment of damages is yet to be carried out. To provide immediate aid, Phoji announced a relief package of ₹10,000 for each burnt-down shop and ₹5,000 for severely damaged shops. However, he cautioned that this relief should not be mistaken for compensation for the losses incurred.

Acknowledging the collaborative efforts of various agencies and the public in containing the blaze after a grueling 4-5 hours, SDPO Mokokchung Tizhi Pojar informed that a case has been registered, and security measures, including the sealing of the complex and deployment of round-the-clock personnel, have been implemented to ensure safety.

In a show of solidarity, Advisor Imkongmar pledged the state government’s commitment to address the situation promptly and provide necessary assistance. Subsequently, Imkongmar, alongside administrative officials and civil society representatives, visited the site to assess the extent of the damage and plan further actions.

Meanwhile, ADC and Administrator of Mokokchung Municipal Council, Chumlamo Humtsoe, issued a notice declaring the closure of certain areas of the building for safety reasons. This includes the RG Block, footwear section, and 1st-floor shops from No. 17 to 42, pending technical assessments to ensure structural stability and the well-being of shopkeepers and customers alike.

As the community rallies together in the aftermath of this tragic incident, the collective efforts of government authorities, civil society organizations, and concerned individuals underscore the resilience and unity of Mokokchung in the face of adversity.
