Section 144 Imposed in Diezephe and Tsithrongse Amid Land Dispute Tensions

Chümoukedima, February 11, 2024: In response to escalating tensions over a land dispute, Commissioner of Police Dimapur, Kevithuto Sophie, has enforced prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) in Diezephe and Tsithrongse villages, Chümoukedima district. The order, effective from 6 pm today until further notice, aims to restore calm following recent unrest.

Incidents on Saturday morning, including property damage such as vandalism of cemeteries, village signboards, gates, and a market shed, as well as the burning of a house, prompted the enforcement of the prohibitory order. Sophie assured that law enforcement agencies have taken measures to contain the situation, deploying police personnel and the District Magistrate to maintain peace and order.

Under the prohibitory order, assembly of more than five persons and carrying lethal weapons, including lathis, daggers, machetes, sticks, spears, catapults, or any other dangerous articles, is restricted within Diezephe and Tsithrongse villages. Additionally, the restriction extends to the road stretch from Singrijan village towards Urra Village.

Commissioner Sophie has also directed all arms license holders in Diezephe and Tsithrongse villages to deposit their licensed arms at the nearest Police Station immediately.

The imposition of Section 144 underscores the authorities’ commitment to ensure public safety and prevent further escalation of tensions amidst the ongoing land dispute.
