NSDMA Urges Caution Amid Persistent Rains Following Cyclone Remal

May 28, 2024: The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has urged the public to exercise caution amid persistent rains in the aftermath of Cyclone Remal. The NSDMA advised avoiding rivers and lakes to prevent drowning and casualties due to flash floods and landslides caused by the cyclonic rainfall.

An update from NSDMA indicated that the state can expect moderate rainfall with occasional heavy spells and moderate to strong winds in the coming week. All District Disaster Management Authorities and related departments have been put on alert for any emergencies.

The NSDMA reported significant damage across the state due to Cyclone Remal and the ongoing monsoon season. Tragically, a 73-year-old man was crushed by a falling retaining wall in Pfutsero, a 7-year-old boy drowned in Laruri village, Meluri, and another drowning incident occurred at Doyang Dam. Additionally, there have been reports of mudslides and damage to public infrastructure and numerous households.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for the northeastern states, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated places, including Nagaland. The state experienced incessant rainfall today, accompanied by strong winds, resulting in landslides and uprooted trees in several locations.
